Annual Exams/Pap Smears - Since the advent of the pap smear 60 years ago, the incidence of cervical cancer has dramatically decreased. Part of the annual examination includes performing the pap smear, breast, abdominal, pelvic and sometimes rectal examination. Depending on a patient’s history, thyroid, heart, lung and skin examinations may be done. Blood pressure, temperature and weight measurements are taken during the annual examination. If necessary, referral to a patient’s primary care physician will be done.

Breast Care - Breast examinations are part of an annual examination. However, a patient may have a concern regarding her breast (e.g. breast mass, nipple discharge) that needs attention. WCHCP provides for evaluation, treatment and diagnosis of breast problems. Patients are referred for mammograms, breast ultrasounds and/or biopsies. Self breast examinations are taught.

Cervical Cancer and Pre-Cancer

Cervical cancer or cancer of the opening to the uterus (womb) was the cause of many deaths prior to the 1940’s. It was in 1945 that the Pap test (smear) was developed. The Pap test is done by swabbing the cervix to look for abnormal cells that could potentially be cancerous or malignant. The Pap test, part of the well woman preventative examination, can be live saving. If the abnormal cells are discovered in time before they progress the disease process can be treated. In 2005, 10,370 U.S. women were diagnosed with cervical cancer and of these 3,710 died.
